The Intermediate Court on Monday imposed a 14-month imprisonment sentence on a local woman who pleaded guilty to a charge of assisting in the disposal of stolen gold jewellery.

Nabilah @ Nurul ‘Iffah’ Alya Nur Ana binti Salim initially denied the charge in December 2020.

However, before the trial could be heard, COVID-19 prompted adjournments. The defendant was initially released on bail, which was later revoked after the defendant breached bail conditions.

During an April 9 mention of the case to fix trial dates, the defendant had a change of heart and pleaded guilty.

The defendant, represented by Defence Counsel Daud Ismail, had assisted in selling off several stolen gold jewellery items which she received from two accomplices.

The pair were sentenced earlier, upon their guilty pleas.

Prosecutor Aeny Zullizam revealed that the defendant had contacted a buyer through social media, arranging to meet up at a shopping complex in Manggis on October 26, 2020.

The jewellery was sold for over BND2,000. Upon realising the jewellery had gone missing, the owner lodged a police report. This resulted in the arrest of the two accomplices, and the discovery of the defendant’s involvement.

Judge Hajah Hazarena binti Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Jaya Dato Paduka Haji Hurairah dished out the sentence after reflecting on the seriousness of the offence, and in deterring others from committing the same crime.
