Temburong youth did the district proud when they completed the kelupis braid project and made their mark in the Brunei Book of Records with a record-breaking 221.43-metre-long braid.

Kelupis are essentially steamed glutinous rice rolls wrapped in nyirik leaves. The traditional snack remains as one of the favourite delicacies in the country commonly served along with its condiments of curry or rendang.

This new feat broke the previous attempt made during the Brunei December Festival 2018 at a length of 212 metres.

The project representative and Temburong District Youth Association member Saerah binti Selamat shared that the project was a collaborative idea of youth members with cooperation from village heads in Temburong.

“What made this kelupis special, aside from its record-breaking length, is that unlike the modern kelupis usually binded together with a plastic string, this one uses daun lamba, like in the olden days,” she said.

The kelupis braid was showcased at the get-together in Temburong, in conjunction with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s 76th birthday celebration.

The kelupis was also distributed to the public who visited their booth during the celebration.

The project began on July 1 and it took the team 15 days to complete the task.
