Nineteen units of weighing machines were found not in compliance with standard requirements during an operation by the Weights and Measures Unit (SDT) of the Industry and Business Ecosystem Division under the Ministry of Finance and Economy, at Pasar Tani in Kampong Selayun and Gadong Wet Market on Thursday.

The equipment owners, failing to comply with Chapter 151 of the Weights and Measures Act, 1983, were issued notices and required to register their equipment used for trade within three working days at the SDT.

The operation was part of the ongoing initiative to protect consumers and encourage local businesses to be transparent in conducting business activities.

Consumers are also advised to ensure weighing and measuring machines used during trading activities involving weight, volume and length of the devices bear valid registration sticker issued by the unit.

As stipulated in the Weights and Measures (Verification) Regulations, 1994 under section 3(2), every person who uses or has in possession for use for trade any weight, measure or instrument for weighing not stamped as required by this regulation shall be guilty of an offence.

The penalty for such offence is a BND1,000 fine or three months’ imprisonment or both; and instrument for weighing shall be liable to be forfeited; and any contract, bargain, sale or dealing made by such weight, measure or instrument for weighing shall be void.
